To optimize the benefit of a solar installation, one should install a time switch, which allows the collector to heat up the stored water during the day and then switch on the electric heating element 1.5 - 2 hours before the hot water is required. It is also advisable to use the entire volume of hot water in the tank in the evening, as opposed to half in the evening and the other in the morning, as the remaining hot water in the tank will lose heat overnight. This results in loss of stored solar energy.
